UK Animal Rights Activists
A site dedicated to the memory of Barry Horne, an animal liberation activist who died in a UK prison hospital on November 5 2001. He had been sentenced to 18 years in prison for various criminal damage and arson attacks mainly against companies involved in vivisection. In prison he went on hunger strike several times in protest against government support for the vivisection industry, and their broken pre-election promises about animal experiments. The third of these hunger strikes lasted 68 days, and Barry never fully recovered. His actions generated worldwide publicity, and initiated a huge upsurge in animal liberation activity, the effects of which are still being felt even today. Dan Wadham
Dan Wadham is a veganarchist and animal rights activist from the UK. On 23rd December 2008 he was convicted with others of 'Conspiracy to Blackmail', in relation to the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty campaign. A campaign to close down the hell that is Huntingdon Life Sciences. Dan was remanded on 19th January 2009 during his sentencing. On 21st January 2009 he received a sentence of 5 years imprisonment. Free the SHAC UK 9
On the 1st March 2007 UK, Belgian and Dutch police carried out 32 separate police raids, involving 700 police officers, the largest attempt at suppressing the animal rights movement in Europe ever. Over 30 people were originally arrested, and subsequently 16 people were charged with Conspiracy to Blackmail HLS (by running a peaceful campaign against them).
Since then three people have had their charges dropped, one has been found not guilty, four people have been found guilty and another three have plead guilty due to the fact that they didn't believe they would get a fair trial. There is another show trial next March (2010) involving 4 other activists.
On the 21st January, 7 SHAC activists from the first show trial were sentenced. Heather 11 years, Gregg and Natasha 9 years, Gavin 8 years, Dan Wadham 5 years, Gerrah 4 years and Dan Amos 4 years. Gari Allen
Gari Allen sadly passed away in 2006 after a short illness. He had been very active in the animal rights movement for over 25 years, involved at all levels, from street stalls to hunt sabotage, from protests to sanctuary work, and including a long career as a leading ALF activist. Gavin Med-Hall
Gavin Medd-Hall is a dedicated vegan activist who has been sent to prison for his dedication and involvement in trying to close down the notorious animal testing laboratory, Huntingdon Life Sciences. Gavin was charged with conspiracy to blackmail and was given conditional bail, preventing him from taking part in any more lawful protest.
In July 2008 he gave a plea of not guilty and was part of a trial lasting 3 months, the longest trial in animal rights history. On 23rd December 2008 he was found guilty. On 21st January 2009, he was given a sentence of eight years imprisonment. Jill Phipps
A website dedicated to the memory of Jill Phipps, a committed animal rights activist who was tragically killed whilst protesting against live exports in 1995, and is intended to keep her memory alive and to promote the annual remembrance ceremony and actions. Jonny Ablewhite
Sentenced to 12 years in prison together with fellow activist, Kerry Whitburn, on attempted blackmail charges in relation to the Save the Newchurch Guinea Pigs Campaign. The Judge's indication of 12 years was based upon information presented to him by the police and the CPS only.
This was given in the form of a case summary and a "schedule" of events - a chronological diary of every 'criminal' action beginning with the 1999 liberation. It is clear how Judge Pert had absolutely no interest in reality. All credit and all mitigation was ignored. The fact the defendants categorically stated they had any involvement in the grave desecration was ignored. Keith Mann
Keith Mann is a well known British animal rights activist and has made many sacrifices for animal liberation, gaining him wide respect within the movement. Now author of 'From Dusk till Dawn' An Insider's View of the Growth of the Animal Liberation Movement. Kevan "Keivan" Hickey
It was when the deadly live export trade came to Coventry and Jill Phipps was killed under the wheels of a lorry carrying young calves that Keivan became involved in the world of Animal Rights and Animal Liberation. He went on to be involved in many campaigns including: live exports, anti-circus demos, hunt sabotage, Consort Beagles Campaign, Close Hillgrove Cat Farm campaign, Stop Huntingdon Life Sciences and Close Shamrock Monkey farm campaigns. Neil Lea
Tribute to a committed animal rights activist. Each day was a battle to overcome his, sometimes very painful, illness to get on with his tireless campaigning for animal rights. For the past 16 years he has been one of the most active animal rights campaigners the movement has ever seen. His energy and dedication has been an inspiration to many. Through RealFood and Vegan Buddies there are hundreds, maybe thousands more vegans in the world. With ARC (Animal Rights Coalition) and ARCNews he has been a major influence in the coordination and organisation of the movement. He was one of the founders and inspirations behind the successful SNGP campaign. Nicole Vosper
Nicole is a green anarchist with an irrepresible love for the wild. She has been fighting for animal communities since she was a child, starting her first animal rights group at school aged 10. Nicole was charged with "conspiracy to blackmail" Huntingdon Life Sciences and remanded on 19/03/09 at Winchester Crown Court after pleading guilty for reasons she is unable to comment on at present. Nicole is due to be sentenced early next year. Robin Webb
Runs the Animal Liberation Press Office in the UK which was set up in 1991 to provide information to the media about direct action undertaken by animal rights activists and groups. Ronnie Lee
Animal rights activist and founder of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). He was originally a member of the Hunt Saboteurs Association in the 1970s before forming an offshoot called the 'Band of Mercy'. He also founded Arkangel, the animal liberation magazine. Sean Kirtley
Sean Kirtley was imprisoned by the state after an 18 week trial which was at the time the longest running animal rights trial in history. He tirelessly campaigned against animal abuse and was always protesting against fur, foie gras and most notably Sequani labs in Ledbury.
UPDATE: SEAN RELEASED FROM PRISON!
September 17, 2009. Sean Kirtley was released after his appeal today! More information and statement from Sean very soon. Here’s to Sean for standing fast in the face of the state and its corrupt police force. SHAC Campaigners
Those who campaign against HLS are often portrayed as misguided and/or terrorists. Nothing could be further from the truth. SHAC is made up of compassionate people from all walks of life and people of all ages from children to pensioners. All of us are outraged at the existence of HLS and all of us are doing as much as we can to make sure that this evil company is closed down for good. Support Dan Amos
Dan Amos is a committed vegan activist who was arrested and bailed after 32 separate police raids, involving 700 police officers in the UK, The Netherlands and Belgium on May 1st 2007. Dan was charged with "conspiracy to blackmail" Huntingdon Life Sciences and remanded on Wednesday 30th July 2008 at Winchester Crown Court after pleading guilty due to circumstantial evidence and the possibility of a trial lasting up to six months. He will not be sentenced until the end of the trial.
UPDATE:
On 21st January 2009, he was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment. Support Gregg, Natasha & Heather (SHAC)
Gregg & Natasha Avery and Heather Nicholson were arrested and remanded into custody after 32 separate police raids, involving 700 police officers in the UK, The Netherlands and Belgium on May 1st 2007. They have been charged with "conspiracy to blackmail" Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) along with a further nine defendants. Their trial is due to start around June 2008. HLS has been exposed on 6 separate occasions abusing and torturing animals simply for profit.
UPDATE:
On the 21st January 7 SHAC activists from the first show trial were sentenced. Heather 11 years, Gregg and Natasha 9 years (it would have been nearly 14 if they hadn't plead guilty), Gavin 8 years, Dan Wadham 5 years, Gerrah 4 years and Dan Amos 4 years.
Added to their sentences, Gregg, Natasha, Heather and Gavin received the most extreme gagging ASBO's ever issued in the UK, they will never be able to publicly campaign or talk about vivisection in UK ever again. On pain of 5 years in prison. They can't write public letters even whilst in prison about vivisection or HLS. Dan A, Dan W and Gerrah have 5 year banning ASBO's. Support Mel Broughton
Mel Broughton was remanded on 14 Dec 2007 at Banbury Magistrates' Court in connection with alleged offences relating to the SPEAK campaign.
UPDATE:
Mel Broughton was sentenced to 10 years on February 13th 2009 in connection with the SPEAK campaign. Mel has been told he must serve at least five years before being eligible for release. A jury cleared him of possessing explosive substances, but failed to reach a verdict on other charges. Following his retrial in 2009 he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for 'conspiracy to commit arson'. Support Sarah Whitehead
Sarah Whitehead is a committed vegan activist who has dedicated her life to saving animals and helping people. She was sentenced to 16 months in prison for rescuing an abused beagle. Sarah was already on a suspended sentence for rescuing animals from a notorious puppy farmer in West Sussex which meant that if she re-offended within two years she would be sent to prison for that "crime".
UPDATE: SARAH HAS BAIL REVOKED
She was due to be released on tag in March 2009 from her 2 year sentence. She had also been on bail awaiting trial for conspiracy to blackmail Huntingdon Life Sciences. On March 13, they took away her bail and had her remanded to custody for the HLS blackmail allegation, she will therefore not be getting any time out on tag before the HLS trial, which is due to start, they reckon, next year.
